What Is pH?

The pH range is from 0 to 14, with 7.0 being neutral. Anything above 7.0 is alkaline; anything below 7.0 is considered acidic. The pH is the measurement of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution, which is the actual measurement of hydrogen ions. The letters pH stand for the potential of hydrogen; “H” is capitalized because it’s the symbol for hydrogen. An increase in hydrogen ions (less bonding) results in a drop of the pH (more acidic), while a decrease in hydrogen ions results in a pH rise (more alkaline). The higher the pH reading, the more alkaline the solution. The lower the pH reading, the more acidic the solution.

As I mentioned earlier, human blood pH should be slightly alkaline, between 7.35 and 7.45. The body continually strives to keep this balance. When it’s compromised, many problems can occur. Just a slight pH imbalance can bring about feelings of fatigue, cause weight gain, promote trouble with food digestion, and cause many different aches and pains. Most parts of the body have different ranges of pH. The skin can vary from 4.5 to 7.0, and stomach acid can range from 1.0 to 3.0. Pancreatic secretions themselves may range from 8.0 to 8.3. However, the blood range must be very narrow. If the pH of your blood gets even slightly outside of this very narrow range, you can become sick. If it deviates too far from the acceptable range for very long, you could go into shock, fall into a coma, or even die. Severe acidosis such as this is rare, but mild acidosis is becoming much more common, and it is thought to affect at least half of the population.

How to test your pH

By analyzing your body’s fluids, you can measure what’s going on inside your body. It’s a good practice to either test one hour before or two hours after eating. You can test your urine and saliva with litmus test strips that you can typically find at drugstores.

Saliva pH test

When you test your saliva, fill your mouth with saliva and then swallow. This helps remove acidic bacteria. Don’t rinse your mouth before testing the saliva because this will record the alkalinity of the water or other liquid you used. Wet a piece of litmus paper with your saliva. While generally more acidic than blood, salivary pH mirrors the blood. It is a fair indicator of the extracellular fluids of your body. Saliva pH levels can range anywhere from 5.5 to 7.5 or more. The optimal pH for saliva is 6.5 to 7.5. A reading lower than 6.5 indicates an insufficient reserve of alkaline. After you eat, your saliva pH should rise to 7.5 or above. If there are enough minerals in your system, your saliva test should register from 7.0 to 7.5. But if your mineral reserves are too low, you will typically test at a 6.4 or below. Some people test as low as 4.5 to 5.75. (Keep in mind that the pH scale works like the Richter scale; it’s logarithmic.
